2008-2009 Fellows: Ellen Sarko

I am currently attending the University of Utah in the Special Education, Visual Impairments Program. I have taught severe special education at Wasatch Mountain Jr. High for the last four years and have thoroughly enjoyed my experience. My district asked me a year ago to become the low vision specialist for the district. Upon taking classes at the University of Utah, my teacher for the deaf-blind class was very inspiring with her knowledge on the subject, and experience. Dr. Nelson sparked my interest in the field.

In addition, I enjoy a challenge. I like the freedom of teaching in the area of deaf-blindness, and its purpose. My philosophy that I share with parents is: No matter the disability, there is a skill we can teach your child to make them a successful adult in the community. This is another reason I want to work in the area of deaf-blindness.
